AVEIRO

The Portuguese Venice

The perfect blend

Perhaps it’s the mixture of a millennia-old culture of salt harvesting and agriculture, a highly rich and industrialized region, fishermen from the estuary and the sea with traditional knowledge enhanced by the strong university presence, that’s the reason why the city of Aveiro and the entire surrounding region possesses a unique atmosphere, extremely welcoming people, and a lively culture with rare energy. In short, it’s a perfect place to live, raise your children, and thrive.

Human presence in Aveiro dates back, at least, to the recent Prehistoric period, evident in the mounds and dolmens found throughout the region, proving to be an asset during the Roman period due to salt production. Aveiro experienced significant development from the 19th century onwards, becoming one of the wealthiest regions with the highest quality of life in Portugal.

Living in Aveiro boils down to two words: quality of life.

Streets that blend Art Deco architecture with a modern and functional city, cut through by canals where you can navigate on “Moliceiros”, the typical boats of the region – a long time ago used to sea plants harvesting – give Aveiro a cheerful atmosphere and the reason why the city is known as the Portuguese Venice.

People

Aveiro’s greatest asset. In 2019, during the pandemic, a Portuguese filmmaker named Bernardo Conde gave an interview to a major newspaper about his latest work, saying – “in Aveiro, other people are people like us”.

That’s one of the incredible things about this city; we immediately feel part of the community. Here, the difference between people isn’t measured, and what matters is the quality of each individual’s character.

Moreover, for the local population, Aveiro is a blessed youth – due to the university’s importance and also with the right dose of vibrant tourism from quality people.

UNIVERSITY OF AVEIRO

Knowledge makes all the difference

University of Aveiro

All cities known for having universities are interesting cities. This is because they become magnets for a floating population seeking knowledge and constantly seeking to evolve their capabilities.

Part of these people end up settling in these cities, and the other part is constantly renewed, thus maintaining a permanent maintenance of contemporaneity, while allowing a conscious appreciation of what has value in local traditions.

That’s exactly what the University Campus of Aveiro does, which collaborates permanently with industries, businesses, and the population.

Beira Mar
